The GMA-SAFE Program was created in 2001 by leading food industry quality assurance professionals and members of the Grocery Manufacturers Association. The goal of the program was to significantly raise standards with regard to food safety, quality and defense, and reduce the number of audits each food industry facility experiences annually.

The GMA-SAFE Assessment suite offers the most comprehensive food protection evaluation available, consisting of six industry specific Assessments (Food Protection, Primary Packaging, Aseptic, Warehouse/ Distribution, Spice and Dairy) plus a shorter, but still thorough, SAFE Express Assessment. These Assessments provide detailed information for the end user to decide conclusively whether the inspected facility meets its own internal standards as well as governmental and/or industry health and safety requirements.
SAFE Assesment Process
The GMA-SAFE Assessment process provides a comprehensive, non-scored narrative of a facility’s activities regarding food protection, quality assurance and food defense. Assessments are not biased toward any proprietary standard but rather are “outcome based”, allowing Assessments to respond to the unique requirements of different cultures, regulatory bodies and consumer preference trends.
Market Acceptance
GMA-SAFE is accepted and is currently relied upon by more than 100 of the largest food manufacturers including Safeway, Heinz, The Coca-Cola Company, P&G and General Mills. Additionally, the program’s Industry Advisory Group (IAG) is comprised of representatives from major US and international food companies. By earning the support of major food companies and integrating them into the IAG, GMA-SAFE continues to earn a strong foothold as the leading third-party assessment platform for the food protection industry.
