What's in the standard?

ISO 22000 discusses specific requirements for a Food Safety Management System (FSMS) that will enable organizations that are directly or indirectly involved in the food chain.

Organizations are required to determine external and internal issues that are relevant to achieving the intended result(s) of its FSMS. These issues should be identified, reviewed and updated for both external and internal issues.

Senior management are required to demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the FSMS and food safety. In addition, top management must ensure all responsibilities have been assigned, communicated and understood across the organisation. 

When planning for the FSMS, organizations are required to determine the risks and opportunities that must be addressed.  

Organizations shall determine and ensure that relevant resources (people, systems, infrastructure, documentation, communication) needed to establish, implement, maintenant, update and continually improve the FSMS.

Organizations are required to plan, implement, control, maintain and update their processes across the distribution route of the end product.

Organisation are required to monitor, measure, analysis and evaluate their FSMS through analysis and evaluation including management review organization's FSMS, at planned intervals, to ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy and effectiveness.

Through continual improvements of the FSMS and under the direction of top leadership organisations should look to evaluate their FSMS and correct nonconformity and corrective actions.
