The British Retail Consortium (BRC) first introduced its Global Standard for Food Safety, a GFSI benchmarked standard, in 1998. Today the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety has almost 16,000 certified sites in over 100 countries world-wide. The BRC food safety standard is designed to provide the basis for certification for food manufacturers who implement good manufacturing practices and have supporting quality management systems. The Standard can be applied to any food processing or food packing operation where open food is handled, processed or packed. BRC also offers standards specific to packaging (BRC IOP) and storage/logistics (BRC Storage and Distribution).
The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 7 was published in January 2015. Issue 7 will replace Issue 6 for all audits commencing July 1, 2015. BRC Issue 7, is rooted in the adoption of HACCP principles and a documented food safety and quality management system. BRC Issue 7 has been extensively revised in consultation with senior representatives from major retailers and food service companies, ensuring that it continues to meet the requirements of manufacturers and retailers. The new issue places increased emphasis on Supplier assurance and food fraud. There is also greater focus on standardizing best practices for auditors.
