ISO 14001 Environmental Management System

SAI Global was the first registrar to achieve North American accreditation for ISO 14001, and remains a leader in providing customized service. SAI Global has registered organizations from a wide variety of sectors, including energy, resources, manufacturing, transportation, food, services and more.

About the Standard

ISO 14001 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) through dedicated technical committees representing approximately 150 countries around the world. Its purpose is to enable an organization of any type or size to develop and implement a policy committing it to prevention of pollution, compliance with legal and other requirements, and continual improvement. The realization of this commitment will be a management system that recognizes and manages the primary environmental issues through awareness and assessment of applicable legal requirements, objectives for improvement, assignment of responsibilities, competent personnel, communications, procedures, controls and monitoring, emergency response capability, self-correction and assessment, and internal reviews. These processes are to be based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle.

The SAI Global Approach

SAI Global can be instrumental in the success of your EMS. Our auditors are trained, capable and motivated to bring value and credibility to your environmental management system, while assessing its conformity to ISO 14001. Your auditors will have the necessary sector specific and environmental experience to meet SAI Global's commitment of Advancing Business Excellence.

SAI Global recognizes that the standard is meant to work for all types of organizations, and the manner in which it is assessed will be appropriate to your business. With this in mind, SAI Global has pioneered innovative new practices. We have extensive capabilities to conduct audits covering multiple standards and specifications, and we routinely offer integrated environmental, quality and health and safety audits. For larger organizations, we can also audit all of your sites and provide analysis of the performance of your management systems.

A unique feature that SAI Global offers its customers and auditors is the support from a dedicated environmental product manager. John Fraser, Product and Development Manager, Environment, ensures SAI Global's on-going technical competency by communicating industry changes to customers and auditors. John was involved with founding SAI Global's environmental management program more than 10 years ago; his extensive expertise in this area proves invaluable to our customers.

What's new to ISO 14001:2015?

The standard has changed as there is new content and it has been restructured. There is now a greater emphasis on management commitment, environmental performance and integration with business processes. This has led to new requirements related to Context, Interested Parties, Risks, Outsourcing, Lifecycle, Procurement, Design and Contractors. As for the new format of the standard, it will follow ISO’s High Level Structure (HLS). The HLS will also be used by ISO 9001 and other ISO management system standards. A comparison of the current and upcoming structures can be found in Annex B of the new version.

How will this revision impact me?

ISO 14001:2015 has a new structure and new requirements. It will take a certain amount of resources on your part to update your Environmental Management System for ISO 14001:2015. If you would like to learn more about how ISO 14001:2015 might impact your organization, you may conduct a pre-assessment. This GAP Analysis will help to demonstrate if or where the audit against the revised standard will differ from your current audit.

With respect to the certification cycles, these are not modified by the 2015 revision; it remains a three-year cycle with timing rules applicable to the current version of ISO 14001. The transition, however, may affect the certification cycle, for example by setting a new start or expiration date, but this depends on a number of factors and may be clarified with your certification body.

When should I start preparing?

You should consider starting the implementation plan now. Begin a dialogue with managers that will be affected by the proposed changes. Help them gain a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand and begin to strategize an action plan for implementation.

If you have certification to more than one standard, look at where management system integration might be possible and beneficial to your organization. You may begin the transition process as soon as the official three-year transition begins. If you wish to do it outside of your regular audit, you may do so, however it would be more efficient to do an upgrade audit to ISO 14001:2015 during one of your regular surveillance audits.
