SAI Global, through its Americas subsidiary, QMI – SAI Global, has been offering accredited certification services in North America since 1993, and remains a leader in providing customized service. SAI Global has registered organizations from a wide variety of sectors, including electronics recycling, recycling and waste management, energy, resources, manufacturing, transportation, food, services and more.
The Recycling Industry Operating Standard® (RIOS®) was established by The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc (ISRI) and about 50 RIOS Charter Members. Its purpose is to provide a systematic framework for recycling plants to achieve measurable continual improvement in their QEH&S performance. The standard builds on the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001platforms.
The result is a QEHS standard comprising most of the requirements of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001, written specifically for the scrap recycling industry.
Why is the certification program important?
Organizations that implement continual improvement management systems, such as RIOS, designed to manage everyday operations that impact on customer satisfaction, environmental and health and safety performance could:
- Improve EHS performance and reduce EHS expenses,
- Reduce operating costs,
- Improve quality and productivity,
- Improve external relations with customers, community and regulatory bodies, and thus provide a competitive advantage through improvement performance and credibility
Who can become RIOS® certified
The RIOS® Standard has been designed to serve the scrap recycling industry and the ISRI membership.
Assuring Confidence
The accredited certification program has been developed by ISRI and about 50 RIOS Charter Members. ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) provides oversight of the independent RIOS® Certification Bodies (CBs), who in turn assure a recycler’s conformity to the Standard.
CBs must continually demonstrate to ANAB that they operate in accordance to the following requirements of:
- ISRI RIOS® Certification Procedures
- ISO 17021© Conformity assessment –Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management system
Who can certify RIOS® system?
Only recognized certification bodies can provide RIOS® certification. Certification to the program requires at least an annual independent audit.
QMI-SAI Global is currently in the process of becoming accredited by ANAB to offer RIOS® certification.
