Quality Assurance Standard for Pet Retailers

Membership of the SAI Global/Pet Care Trust Scheme allows pet retailers to prove that the standards of animal welfare and retailing in their premises meet agreed levels of best practice, and gives an assurance to the consumer of the quality of operations, through independent audit.
 
The Pet Retailer Standards currently cover:
• Staff training in animal husbandry and welfare
• Customer care
• Health and safety
• Compliance with legislation, including that on animal welfare
• The six taxa-specific standards for mammals, reptiles, birds and fish
• Self assessment forms with tick boxes
• Blank templates for record keeping
• Legislation outline
• Guidance on animal weaning, biosecurity, acclimatization and evacuation

SAI Global membership enables retailers to assure customers of the quality to which their store operates. It will help them secure a market for the future as the Standards are designed to demonstrate best practice to consumers, local legislators and stakeholders.
 
Consumers
SAI Global and the Pet Care Trust are working together to grow recognition of the scheme as a credible independent  sign of best practice in the pet retail sector.
 
Fees
The membership fees cover the cost of inspections, both routine and spot checks, the cost of administration and membership paperwork including certificates.
 
Who does the inspections?
SAI Global has a 80 strong team of auditors. They have built up a reputation for providing an efficient, professional service showing that they understand the needs of a busy business. The auditors have proven background knowledge and are fully trained and supervised to ensure they carry out the audit correctly.
 
Who does the certification?
SAI Global certify all retailers. This means upon receipt of an inspection report they are responsible for deciding whether a retailer has achieved the relevant standard and a certificate can be issued. SAI Global employ fully trained and qualified certification managers and they follow guidelines to ensure consistent decisions. SAI Global are accredited by UKAS under EN45011, which demonstrates that we work to a high level of operational competency in all aspects of delivery of certification.
 
Verification
It is easy to confirm that a retailer is a SAI Global/PCT approved premise. Assured producers are issued with a certificate which should be on display in store. Our administration team is also happy to confirm the status of a store. click here to send us an email.
