This full day workshop will work through the requirements of the Standards AS/NZS 4187, Cleaning, disinfecting and sterilising resuable medical and surgical instruments and equipment, and maintenance of associated environments in health care facilities and AS/NZS 4815, Office based health care facilities – reprocessing of medical and surgical instruments and equipment, and maintenance of the associated environment. Both standards set out the procedures and process development which can be validated for reprocessing of resuable items in both hospitals and office based practices.

This is the working title of the revised edition – still awaiting for publication.

The workshops will cover:

  • Requirements of AS/NZS 4187 and AS/NZS 4815

  • Cleaning of reusable instruments and equipment

  • Sterilising and sterilising procedures

  • Packaging and storage of equipment

  • Validation and monitoring

  • Quality management and record keeping

 

arrow Learning Outcomes

By attending this workshop and with further reading of AS/NZS 4187 or AS/NZS 4815, participants should be able to:

  • Outline the significant differences between AS 4187 and AS/NZS 4185

  • Discuss cleaning methods used to reprocess reusable items

  • State the main procedures relating to packaging of reusable items for sterilisation

  • Review types of sterilising equipment and state the principles for loading and unloading of sterilisers

  • Describe the major elements involved in validation and routine monitoring of the sterilisation process

  • Identify key aspects of quality management as they apply to sterilisation processes; and

  • Explain the requirements for storage and handling of sterile items.

This workshop would suit nurses, including operating room and gastroenterological nurses, sterilising technicians, health care administrators, infection control workers, state health authorities, doctors, dentists, hospital engineers, manufacturers of cleaning equipment and products and sterilisers for use in health care and office based facilities.

RN, Grad Dip Education and Training, Certificate in Sterilisation and Infection Control, Certificate in Perioperative Nursing, Certificate in Operating Suite Management.

Terry McAuley is on the Australian Standards Committee responsible for both AS/NZS 4187 and AS/NZS 4815. Terry is an independent Sterilisation and Infection Control consultant. Prior to this, Terry had first hand experience in implementing the original requirements of AS 4187-1994 in a major metropolitan teaching hospital. She has conducted consultancies in sterilising departments for a number of Victorian hospitals, assisting them to improve compliance with the Standard and to identify areas for productivity and efficiency gains. Her background and experience has given her a unique perspective on the implications the subsequent revisions of these Standards may have on hospitals and office based facilities.
